Lawmakers Forced to Grovel After Suggesting Diplomacy
Letter was "released by staff without vetting"
Yesterday, a group of Congressional Democrats issued a nothingburger of an open letter, timidly suggesting that the Biden administration consider employing diplomacy in the Ukraine/Russia conflict, rather than rush headlong into global thermonuclear war.
Today, in a move that proves once again that Paul Verhoeven was right when he said “War makes fascists of us all,” the lawmakers were forced to issue a humiliating retraction of that letter.
Apparently, any opinion other than unconditional support for total war with Russia is now unacceptable, even among the allegedly anti-imperialist and anti-war Left.
Judging by the official statement, the Congressional Progressive Caucus has completed its mandatory re-education program in record time, professing, in part:
“The letter was drafted several months ago, but unfortunately was released by staff without vetting … Every war ends with diplomacy, and this one will too after Ukrainian victory.”
Clearly, these legislators are unfamiliar with the definition of “diplomacy,” which is “the established method of influencing the decisions and behaviour of foreign governments and peoples through dialogue, negotiation, and other measures short of war or violence.”
The absurdity of suggesting that diplomacy will only take place after the defeat of Russia is second only to the absurdity that US lawmakers are now completely restricted from expressing even the most limited of reservations regarding the wisdom of pursuing a war of annihilation against a nuclear superpower.
It's worth noting that one consequence (perhaps not entirely unintentional) of this little experiment in half-hearted dissent is to ensure everyone knows that it is utterly beyond the pale to point out that this war is based on the premise that allowing Russian-speaking people, living in a historically-Russian region to vote on joining Russia is somehow antithetical to the principles of democracy and freedom.
“Give peace a chance,” you say? Not today, Comrade, not today.
